At the risk of endangering this column's reputation for impartiality, we have to say that the second candidate at these hustings, Chamali Fernando, ought not to be written off.

Miss Fernando is only 28, and looks very young and pretty.

But she made a spirited attempt to suggest that these very qualities would enable her to take on Ken and Boris: "I will be the rose between two thorns."

For good measure, the self-possessed Miss Fernando claimed she will be "the flower that blossoms in the eyes of the electorate" and become "the first ever young, female, Asian mayor of London".

Miss Fernando had an arresting turn of phrase: "If there is negativity in the barracks let us find it, grab it and bin it."
